Premiere: ‘Contrast’ by Dream Joints

Dream Joints’ debut, releasing through Bleeding Gold Records, is an uncanny valley of melodic pop and haunted space stations

With spectral reverb, bleeding dyes, and a baritone inflection, Mike Turi’s project as Dream Joints is an effervescent mystery of lights and rolling smoke. Turi, originally of Wild Wild Wets, navigates through a time slip and finds himself in an alternate universe of haunted compositions and eerie instrumental breaks.

Premiering here is “Contrast”: Imagine Cliff Martinez and Bear in Heaven arm-wrestling in the middle of an asteroid belt. If you haven’t seen the music video for Dream Joints’ “Anthem” — there is some great Stephin Merritt-like humor in the four-minute ode to anxiety and impatience — this is the appropriate time to sidecar that single to the reveal of this particular song.

Dream Joints in the perfect title for Turi’s constellation of deliberately droned out pop verses, Ariel Pink-style deliveries, and washed out harmonies. Releasing on the 26th of May, Just Like Medicine promises to be a wonderfully catchy and yet unmistakably disorienting approach to music: Unpretentious, melodic, dizzying.
